In 2011, voters in Mississippi, arguably one of the most conservative states in the nation, rejected a personhood amendment to its constitution that would have enshrined the idea that life begins at conception. A full fifty-eight percent of voters were against it.
Two theories behind why the amendment failed. One is that being conservative is *supposed* to be small government, so it makes a lot of sense that a conservative or conservatives wouldn't be in support of something like this if they really are pro-less government.

The other theory is that the personhood amendment effects more than just abortion, let alone pro-choice people. Now, the amendment is going after things that affect lifers too like birth control (because many do support it despite the small vocal minority that are against it), IVF, and miscarrying a pregnancy (as some people think that's murder even if many causes of miscarriage are still not well known).

There are several ballot questions already being prepped for the 2014 midterms, including another personhood referendum in Colorado.
*Giggle snort* Ah, the pro-personhood folks will never learn. How many times must something fail for these people to get that no one wants these laws of personhood to pass?
