Roe vs. Wade has been overturned. I am two days late posting this, but it happened on Friday.

Luckily, Maryland still has legalized abortion. However, I am worried that Mitch McConnell will try to start a bill having a nation wide abortion ban now...especially if Republicans are successful during the Midterms.

From NARAL:
The U.S. House just passed a bill that's so radical, doctors who dare violate the law and provide abortion care could go to jail for up to five years. H.R. 36 would ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy and put women at grave risk.

The bill is now moving to the U.S. Senate, where Mitch McConnell has promised to bring the bill up for a vote and President Trump has promised to sign into law, given the chance.

If it becomes law, many women will be left with no safe and legal option for abortion access after 20 weeks, and doctors will be criminalized just for providing reproductive healthcare.

Sign the petition to tell your senator to vote NO on this dangerous, unconstitutional, extreme ban on abortion.

Abortion rates are higher in countries where the procedure is illegal and nearly half of all abortions worldwide are unsafe, with the vast majority in developing countries, a new study concludes.

Experts could not say whether more liberal laws led to fewer procedures, but said good access to birth control in those countries resulted in fewer unwanted pregnancies.

This is a highly important snippet from the article to point out:
Dr Sedgh said there was a link between higher abortion rates and regions with more restrictive legislation, such as in Latin America and Africa. They also found that 95 to 97 per cent of abortions in those regions were unsafe.

The authors defined unsafe abortion as any procedure done by people lacking necessary skills or in places that did not meet minimal medical standards.

I've been reading "Legends, Lies, and Cherished Myths of American History" by Richard Shenkman for the last couple days. One thing they talk about is some history regarding abortion before Roe vs. Wade. Some facts you might know, others you may not (I certainly didn't know some of these facts).

*Before Roe vs.Wade, the assumption that abortion had always been illegal in the US is wrong.
-There weren't any laws against abortion until the 1820s. Even many years after that, most states permitted abortion in the first four months of pregnancy.
-Abortion began to be generally outlawed only in the mid 19th century.
-Women continued to have abortions because they provided a guaranteed method of birth control.
-Abortions were generally outlawed during the mid to late 19th century and early 20th century, however Americans seem not to have been terribly bothered by the widespread resort to the practice.
-Between 1849 to 1858 in Massachusetts, of thirty-two accused "abortionists", not one was convicted. The juries composed solely of men freed every one of the suspects.
-Women seemed less inclined than men to condemn abortion.
-A doctor's obversation from 1896: "Many otherwise good and exemplary women, who would rather part with their right hands or let their tongues cleave to the roof of the mouth than commit a crime, seem to believe that prior to quickening it is no more harm to cause the evacuation of the contents of their wombs than it is that of their bladders or their bowels."

När anti-abortlobbyn kom till Sverige

I en internationell kampanj har en mäktig kristen lobbyorganisation drivit på ett svenskt rättsfall, där en barnmorska vägrat arbeta med aborter.

English translation:
When anti-abortion lobby came to Sweden
An international campaign has a powerful Christian lobby organization driven in a Swedish court case, where a midwife refused to work with abortions.

I'm going to say the same thing that I have remarked about when we have had issues in the U.S with pharmacists not wanting to sell birth control. If you can't do an aspect of your job because it goes against your morals or you are not comfortable about it, don't fucking do that job. How simple is that? I've been told by acting teachers that if I don't like something about a role that I'm not comfortable with or it compromises my morals, that I should tell the director and then I would be replace even if it would cost me a job.

I know in the states that we are more lenant if a doctor, nurse, or midwife doesn't want anything to do with an abortion. However, Sweden is not the same way as the states. You would be surprised to know how aggressive Swedes can get if someone tries to change their system. They won't have it. Because, here is the thing...with the exception of the Swedish Democratic party (which is the Swedish cousin of the British Nationalist Party), the other seven parties in parliament don't have any pro-life or anti-abortion plat form. Not even the Christian Democrats have that platform, and they are the closet thing to being pro-life in Sweden. The reason why, with the exception of one, all these political parties (especially those on the right) don't have that platform is because illegalizing abortion would be flat out political suicide.

Unlike the U.S where, while Democrats or Republicans would get majority of power as what happened witht his past election, Democrats and Republicans would always have power because we've set up a system where you can't fully vote out either party...it's not the same way in Sweden. If a party would not get 4% of the votes, they would be voted out of power. It's happen before. So, even if the Swedish Democrats, for example...would get enough votes to get leadership and somehow manage to illegalize abortion successfully, it would be a short-term joy for them as they would be voted out of power completely. That is political suicide in Sweden.

Still, I can't believe this movement is now picking up steam here. Hopefully, it's short lived.

From NARAL:
Late last week, as most Americans were preparing to enjoy a long weekend, two House Republicans introduced a bill that would ban abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy.

Because that is before many women even know they're pregnant, this would amount to a COMPLETE, FEDERAL BAN on abortion.

It is crucial that we lay down a firm marker in opposition to this piece of legislation right now, before it moves any further.

Sign the petition to Congress saying you oppose this dangerous, unconstitutional, extreme ban on abortion.

I took a screen cap from the page of the Women's March to show how many sister marches are going on outside of Washington D.C and the U.S. It is phenominal how many marchers have registered outside of D.C.

If one can happen near me in Sweden, that would be great (the closest is six hours away, unfortunately, in Stockholm). I'm hoping one happens in Götenborg or Borås

As you all know, there will be a Women's March on Washington on the day after Donald Trump's inaugeration...which is January 21st. The march starts at ten a.m. If you can't attend the big march in Washington D.C, there are having them in other states as well as all over the world. For more information, go here

The Supreme Court was something of an under-the-radar issue in the 2016 campaign, extremely important to some groups (especially white evangelicals), but not discussed all that much on a national level. But now that Donald Trump has been elected, and with the success of the GOP’s only-Republican-presidents-are-allowed-to-fill-vacancies strategy, it will be of tremendous importance to the country’s future.

No issue will be more volatile than abortion, which raises the inevitable question: Is Roe v. Wade doomed?

That question is coming up again in the wake of the Ohio legislature’s shocking decision to pass a ban on abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is usually about six weeks into a pregnancy, before many women even know they’re pregnant. Under current jurisprudence, this ban is almost certainly unconstitutional. But maybe by the time it reaches the Supreme Court, it won’t be.
