From PP:
Birth control is basic, preventive health care that millions of women rely on every day. Over 99 percent of sexually active women use birth control at some point in their lives, for a wide variety of reasons. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are now required to cover contraception with no out-of-pocket cost, a landmark step for women's health that gives many women access to affordable birth control for the first time.

Now a handful of out-of-touch, mostly male employers want to take that coverage away — and force their own beliefs onto tens of thousands of employees. They think they should have the power to withhold coverage they don't agree with. They want the right to interfere with their employees' personal, private medical decisions — and the Supreme Court could give it to them.

Those private medical decisions go far beyond access to birth control. If the Court rules in favor of these employers, it could pave the way for employers to deny coverage of other basic health care, like vaccines and mental health treatment, based solely on their personal beliefs. Birth control access shouldn't be up to your boss. Add your name to our letter today.

From Planned Parenthood:

Obamacare has already delivered benefits to millions, and when the law goes more fully into effect next year, it will be the biggest step forward for women's health in a generation.

So how does one stop something that will do so much good for so many people? First, you hold 40 separate votes to repeal the law (and counting!). Then, you do whatever it takes to convince the public that Obamacare won't help them — no matter how much it really does. And unfortunately, that includes misleading, hiding the truth, and even flat-out lying about what the law provides.

Don't fall for it. The more you know about what Obamacare means, the better off you'll be. Test your knowledge with our quick quizevery correct answer will generate a 10 cent donation to help Planned Parenthood keep Obamacare working for women.

From Planned Parenthood:

Peace Corps Volunteers are denied insurance coverage for abortion, even in cases of rape or incest, and even when their lives are in danger. They serve our country and communities around the world, and they deserve equal treatment from our government. Tell your senators to change this unjust policy.

Catholic, anti-abortion Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad could soon find himself in an uncomfortable position: He may have to sign off on payments for every Medicaid-funded abortion in his state.

A bill requiring that authorization is sitting on the Republican's desk after moving through the statehouse. If Branstad signs it, Iowa is likely to be the only state that would have the unique requirement.

Iowa's Medicaid program covers a small number of abortions each year due to rape, incest, fetal deformity or to protect a mother's life. Currently handled by the state Department of Human Services, the Medicaid reimbursements cost the state less than $20,000 last fiscal year.

The change in who approves the payment is a result of Iowa's unusual political landscape. It is one of only three states with a divided legislature, with Republicans controlling the state House and Democrats the Senate. Blocking funds for Medicaid abortions has been a priority for some conservative Iowa Republicans in recent years, but past efforts to change the rules — as well as make some of the more sweeping abortion restrictions seen in other GOP-majority states —have failed to advance in the Senate.

But a split legislature can lead to unusual deal-making. In this case, the abortion plan was negotiated as part of a complex health care bill that included accepting additional federal dollars to expand low-income health care in the state — a key priority for Democrats. Republicans hope by putting the decision into the hands of an anti-abortion governor, fewer public dollars will be spent on abortions. Democrats say they expect no changes, but abortion rights advocates fear it could restrict access to abortions for poor women.

Remember the bill in ND I mentioned last week? Yeah, it was signed into law by ND's governor.

From PP:
North Dakota just passed the most extreme abortion ban in the country. It's just one of some 300 bills across the country designed to take away women's rights and access to health care -- and ultimately to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Don't let lawmakers get away with it, take action today.

I'm sharing this action notice from Planned Parenthood two days later, which I got on Women's International Day (March 8...which is also my birthday). Even though it's not the 8th anymore, we can still tell Secretary Kerry to protect women's health and rights worldwide since it needs protection everyday.

From PP:
On International Women's Day, delegations from around the world are gathering at the United Nations headquarters to find ways to eliminate violence against women and girls. As Secretary of State, John Kerry has a unique opportunity to lead the way and protect women's health and rights worldwide.

Tell Secretary Kerry to support comprehensive protections for women and girls, including reproductive rights, in global negotiations to eliminate gender based violence and stand strong for women's health as Secretary of State.

I got this from both Planned Parenthood and NOW, though I will share what NOW sent me:
There is a chance that the bipartisan, inclusive Senate-passed Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (S. 47) could pass the House of Representatives tomorrow.

But, the completely unacceptable substitute VAWA, being pushed by Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) with Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash) as the sponsor, will be brought to the floor for a vote first. If the substitute fails, House members will then be able to vote yea or nay on the Senate-passed bill. We think we have the votes to defeat the substitute and pass the inclusive Senate bill, but we must have your help! We are so close now, with 201 co-sponsors and 19 House Republicans who signed a letter asking Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to allow the Senate bill to have a floor vote.

Please contact your House member, whether Democrat or Republican, and implore them to vote for the Senate-approved VAWA. The Senate version contains program improvements essential to bring protection and support to violence survivors who have not had access to services in the past.

Please make a call and send an email message right away, and don't forget to let them know that you are a voter in their district. Since we have only a few hours to reach House members, your calls and email messages must be sent today and early Thursday morning.

I took this action through Planned Parenthood:
President Obama is holding the line on making no-cost birth control available to women no matter where they work. Now it's our turn. The administration has 60 days to collect public comments on the rule -- I made mine in support and I need you to add yours right now
[identity profile] lynn82md.livejournal.com
From Planned Parenthood:
It's been 40 years since Roe v. Wade made abortion legal in this country.

Forty years of protecting every woman's fundamental right to make the most personal medical decisions.

Forty years of ensuring that abortion remains a safe and legal procedure for a woman to consider, if she needs it.

And, it's been 40 years of facing a vocal minority of politicians and others who continue to insist on interfering with a woman's decisions about her own health.

That's why, as the 40th anniversary approaches on Tuesday, those of us who trust women, who value their health and rights, have something to say — and we hope you'll join us: Roe is here for good.

I know this news is extremely belated (like over a week belated), but Congress included the Shaheen Amendment in the final National Defense Authorization Act. The amendment secures military women access to safe and legal abortion. I got the email about this from Planned Parenthood days before Christmas. Thought you all would like to know, especially if you haven't heard about it yet.
[identity profile] lynn82md.livejournal.com
From Planned Parenthood:
The Shaheen amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed with bipartisan support in the Senate, and is facing its final step in Congress before being signed into law. We need you to speak out now to push this historic legislation over the finish line.

Women who choose to serve in the armed forces deserve the same rights as any other woman — including the right to make the most personal, most private medical decisions. Though as many as 19,000 military women are sexually assaulted each year, they are denied insurance coverage for abortion even in cases of rape and incest. If an active-duty soldier becomes pregnant as a result of rape, she is told, "You're on your own." That's unfair and unacceptable — and we have a chance to change it.

Stand with servicewomen and against this unfair law. Tell your members of Congress to protect the Shaheen amendment in the final NDAA.
