From NOW:
Join NOW President Terry O'Neill on Tuesday, Jan. 22, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that recognized women's fundamental right to abortion. NOW affirms that women's access to the full range of reproductive health services -- including safe, legal and affordable abortion care and birth control -- is integral to women's ability to participate equally in our society.

This year our annual candlelight vigil will feature engaging speakers, including:
» Ellie Smeal, Feminist Majority President
» Kimberly Inez McGurie, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health
» Allison Stouffer, DC NOW

If you're in the D.C. area, we hope you'll join the NOW Action Center outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Bring your Keep Abortion Legal and NOW rounds and battery-operated candles (note: traditional candles are not allowed outside the Court). NOW will also have some signs and battery-operated votives on hand.

From Planned Parenthood:
The Shaheen amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed with bipartisan support in the Senate, and is facing its final step in Congress before being signed into law. We need you to speak out now to push this historic legislation over the finish line.

Women who choose to serve in the armed forces deserve the same rights as any other woman — including the right to make the most personal, most private medical decisions. Though as many as 19,000 military women are sexually assaulted each year, they are denied insurance coverage for abortion even in cases of rape and incest. If an active-duty soldier becomes pregnant as a result of rape, she is told, "You're on your own." That's unfair and unacceptable — and we have a chance to change it.

Stand with servicewomen and against this unfair law. Tell your members of Congress to protect the Shaheen amendment in the final NDAA.

Sign the Bill of Reproductive Rights if:
-You want everyone to have the right to make their own decisions about their own reproductive health and future, free from intrusion or coercion by any goverment, group, or individual

-You want everyone to have the right to a full range of safe, affordable, and readily accessible reproductive healthcare. This includes pregnancy care, preventive services, contraception, abortion, fertility treatment, and accurate information about all of the above.

-You want everyone to have the right to be free from discrimination in access to reproductive healthcare or on the basis of our reproductive decisions.

I know I never made an offical statement about it, but talking about reproductive rights in other states and countries is allowed in this community...even if the focus is mostly in Maryland. However, as I learned gradually, Maryland isn't exactly a hot spot for issues when it comes to reproductive rights like it is in other states and on a national level. Of course, I've always had it as a guideline that it's fine to talk about reproductive rights in other states and countries. In fact, I encourage it heavily especially if you're from a state or country that still has issues with reproductive rights.

From Naral MD:
You've heard the term "man up?" The very same men leading the War on Women want you to "woman up." No, seriously. This is a real thing.

"Woman Up" is a new campaign to soften the image of anti-choice congressional leadership. The very same men behind it -- Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.), Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), and Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (Wis.) -- are leading the charge to wage the War on Women. The irony is almost laughable.

A feminist-sounding campaign name can't erase the onslaught of legislative attacks these very same politicians launched on women: Rape audits. All-male panels on birth control. Defunding Planned Parenthood.

Take action with NARAL Pro-Choice America and tell these anti-choice politicians that the only "Woman Up" campaign that matters is the one that ends their War on Women.

Btw, the initial email I got from Naral had this quote from Boehner:
And now, now we are going to have a fight over women’s health. Give me a break. This is the latest plank in the so-called War on Women. Entirely created, entirely created by my colleagues across the aisle for political gain.
"John Boehner On ‘War On Women’: ‘Give Me A Break’," Talking Points Memo, April 27, 2012

As you all know, the national rally will be on April 28th, 2012 in DC. However, just in case you can't go to the nation's capital, there are going to be local rallies and marches all over the country.

For Maryland, a rally is planned to be held at War Memorial Plaza in Baltimore. It's from 10 am until 2 pm. For more information on that rally, go to here.

If you want to check out what events or volunteering opportunities are in your state, go to here.

From PP:
After weeks of debate and an enormous outcry from Planned Parenthood supporters nationwide, the Senate rejected the Blunt Amendment, a measure that would have allowed any employer to deny women who work for them insurance coverage for birth control. The message is clear: birth control is basic health care, and your medical decisions should be between you and your doctor.

This is a huge victory for women's health, and your senators were an important part of that victory. Please, take a moment right now to thank your senators for voting to defend access to affordable birth control.

For people that live outside of Maryland, you can go here to see how your senators voted for and send them a message of thanks or outrage.

I got this from PP. The letter was written by a supporter of PP. It was nicely written. If you agree with it, sign the letter

From NARAL:
Last year, under Boehner’s watch, the U.S. House of Representatives held eight votes on choice-related issues. That’s the highest number in a decade!

Boehner’s attacks made clear that he could not care less about women’s health, privacy, and dignity.

His “Let Women Die” bill (H.R.358) gives hospitals the right to refuse to provide a woman with emergency, lifesaving abortion care – even if she will die without it.
His “Rape Audits” bill (H.R.3) could spur the Internal Revenue Service to audit rape survivors who choose abortion care.
He almost shut down the entire federal government over women’s access to birth control and cancer screenings.

We will not stand by and let him attack women’s right to make personal, private health-care decisions in 2012. Join us in challenging Speaker Boehner to put an end to the War on Women and stop holding votes attacking choice. Add your name to our letter.

From NARAL:
On November 8, 2011, Mississippians will go to the polls to vote on Ballot initiative 26, which is a vote on whether to ban abortion and possibly most types of birth control in Mississippi. Our opponents are so cruel that they would force a woman who survives rape to carry a pregnancy caused by her attacker.

We know that anti-choice groups have set their sights on Mississippi and, if this egregious measure passes, it will be a victory for anti-choice activists across the country. We can’t let this happen!

NARAL Pro-Choice America is partnering with The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and Planned Parenthood Federation of America to say “NO!” to Initiative 26, and we need YOU!

Training, dinner and refreshments will be provided to all of our volunteers. Phone bank dates (exact event location will be shared when you RSVP):

Tuesday, November 1, 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Thursday, November 3, 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Monday, November 7, 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
(Farragut North Metro area)

If you want to contact the person in charge, let me know and I'll message the email to you.

Planned Parenthood is joining forces with American Dream movement allies to stand up against cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Cuts to Medicaid, in particular, could drastically impact Planned Parenthood's ability to serve their most vulnerable patients.

The rally is going to be at noon on Thursday, July 28 and it's going to take place at the East-side steps of Capitol Building, Corner of 1st Street NE and Independence Ave S.E

Free t-shirts and signs will be avaiable

Tomorrow is Lobby Day and there will be a big pro-choice rally at the Washington Mall from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. If you can't tend to the pro-choice rally at the Washington Mall, join your local pro-choice chapters as they meet at your state capital to protest the legistration that threatens the reproductive rights of Americans.

Unfortunately for me, I had to go back to Sweden five days ago so I won't be able to participate in any of these events. I will still wear my pro-choice garb though to stand for choice over three thousand miles away. Give them hell and stand up for choice!

From NARAL MD:
Dr. LeRoy Carhart joined the staff of Germantown Reproductive Health Services at the end of 2010. Dr. Carhart has long been a champion of women’s health and privacy, and his work makes it possible for women to make the personal and private decision to access safe, legal abortion care with dignity.

Today, the anti-choice groups Operation Rescue & Maryland Coalition for Life are opening an office directly across the street from Dr. Carhart’s clinic. These groups are trying to shut down a legitimate health-care provider by opening a fake clinic that will mislead women about their health-care options. They oppose giving women control over their own decisions, but they are okay with misleading women.

We are concerned about the harassment women will face just because they’re making a private, personal decision. We must stand in support with women and our providers. Anti-choice extremists need to know that harassment of women and clinic staff is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our community.

Please join us in opposing anti-choice “clinics” that refuse to provide women their full reproductive health options in Maryland.

I signed it

Did you hear? The House voted to bar Planned Parenthood from federal funding. They cut funding for HIV tests, cancer screenings, birth control, and more, putting millions of women and families at risk. We can't let it go unanswered. It's time for you and me to stand with Planned Parenthood. Sign the open letter to the reps who voted for this bill — and to the senators who still have a chance to stop it.

A portion of the email I got from NARAL:
Yesterday, anti-choice lawmakers dropped the portion of the “Stupak on Steroids” agenda that would have redefined rape.

But unbelievably, they added new language that would let hospitals refuse to provide abortion care when necessary to save a woman’s life.

You read that correctly. Anti-choice politicians have gone from redefining rape to denying abortion care, even to women who will die without it.

Please contact your member of the House right now and say that the entire “Stupak on Steroids” agenda has got to go.
[identity profile] lynn82md.livejournal.com
So, I mention this on the community last time. Would you like to express your opposition to this disgusting bill and let your politicans know about this (if you haven't already done so through action notices given by NARAL and PP)?

If so, go here to sign a petition to oppose this new bill that would redefine "rape" and set women's rights back

I already signed it and this is what I said:
What I said )

PS-Spread this petition around on to your family, friends, networking sites, and pro-choice communities on Live Journal. It's time to let these idiots know they have gone too far!

From NARAL:
Anti-choice Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana just introduced legislation to dismantle the nation’s family-planning network.

His bill would slash funding for Planned Parenthood and other family-planning clinics that provide important preventive medical care to millions of women and men every year.

Passing this bill is one of the anti-choice movement's top three priorities. We have beaten this same attack before, but the number of anti-choice members of Congress is much higher now. We are lobbying hard against it again, and now we need your help.

Please tell your member of Congress that you strongly oppose this anti-choice bill.
